The ABS light on your dash means at least one wheel stopped reporting speed to the module. A multimeter and an hour under the car can tell you whether the sensor itself died, the wiring is at fault, or the tone ring was damaged. Passive vs. Active: Know Which Sensor You Have
The method depends on the sensor. Passive two-wire sensors generate their own small AC signal as the tone ring spins past a magnetic tip, so they can be tested with a multimeter alone. Active Hall-effect sensors need power from the ABS module and come in two- or three-wire designs, which means they usually need a wiring diagram and scan tool or careful back-probing instead of a simple resistance check.
Check the connector and the vehicle’s wiring diagram if you are unsure which type is fitted. The connector pin count is a strong hint: a two-pin connector usually means a passive sensor, though some active sensors also use two wires, so confirm the type before choosing your test.
How Do You Properly Test the Wheel Speed Sensor?

- Raise and support the vehicle securely on jack stands so the wheel is free to spin. Disconnect the battery before starting. Before any resistance or continuity test, also unplug the ABS control module connector so the controller cannot be damaged.
- Unplug the sensor connector at the wheel and inspect the terminals, connector body, and visible harness for corrosion, chafing, broken wires, or contamination. A large share of “bad sensor” faults are wiring faults, so fix anything visible before measuring anything.
