Finding the Right Replacement Lock

Compatibility comes down to four things: the toolbox brand, the lock code, the cylinder type, and the shape of the cam or swing arm that throws the latch. The cam is the metal tab that rotates when you turn the key, and on many locks it’s model-specific — meaning you may need to pull the old one out and reinstall it on the new cylinder in the same position.

Start by reading the code stamped on the lock face or on the original key.

For Dee Zee truck tool boxes, a replacement lock is sold specifically for paddle handle latches. Before ordering anything, measure the opening and confirm the cylinder type so the new lock seats flush and the screws or retaining clip line up.

Removing the Old Cylinder

Open the toolbox fully and work from the inside of the door. The old cylinder is held in one of two ways: a retaining clip that pries off, or a threaded nut that unscrews. Some locks use plain screws or bolts instead — remove whatever secures it and pull the cylinder out through the front of the door.

As the cylinder comes out, note how the cam or swing arm sits. That position matters more than people expect; if the cam is keyed to the handle mechanism, reinstalling it rotated 180 degrees will leave the latch dead.

Installing the New Lock

Slide the new cylinder into the opening from the outside, then secure it from the inside with the clip, nut, or screws you removed.
