Replacing a V belt requires relieving tension, removing the old belt, matching its routing and size exactly, and tensioning the new one correctly.
Whether you’re working on a car, an HVAC blower, or a piece of shop equipment, the job follows the same mechanical logic. The difference is in the details: your belt’s profile and length must match the old one, and the routing has to be identical. Step 1: Secure the Machine and Record the Routing
Disconnect power or the battery before touching anything. Gates Techzone, the belt manufacturer’s technical resource, says to disconnect the car battery and set the hand brake before replacing a Micro-V belt. The same logic applies to any machine: make sure it can’t start while you’re working.
The one task that saves you from a ruined afternoon is recording the belt path before you remove it. Draw a sketch or take a picture of the routing from directly above. This is non-negotiable — the new belt must follow the exact same path, and the correct route is hard to figure out from memory once the belt is off.
While you’re under the hood or inside the drive cover, check the pulleys. Gates recommends inspecting the pulleys for wear and confirming their alignment before installing a new belt. A worn or misaligned pulley will destroy a fresh belt just as fast as an old one.
Step 2: Relieve Tension and Remove the Old Belt
Classic V-belt drives use a manual tensioning system, typically an accessory like an alternator that pivots on a bracket. Loosen the mounting bolt and the adjusting bolt, then move the accessory toward the engine to release the belt’s tension. Once it’s slack, the belt slides off the pulleys.
Some systems, especially serpentine and Micro-V setups, use a spring-loaded tensioner. Rotate the tensioner arm with a breaker bar or a dedicated tool to release tension, then slip the belt off.
If other belts or components block access, remove them. Fitting a belt by prying it on with a screwdriver damages the belt and the pulleys.
Step 3: Match the New Belt’s Size and Profile
V-belts are not one-size-fits-all. The replacement must match the section (the cross-section profile) and the length. The most common classical sections are A, B, C, D, and E. As a reference, an A-section belt measures 13 mm across the top and 8 mm tall; B is 17 mm by 11 mm; C is 22 mm by 14 mm; D is 32 mm by 19 mm; and E is 38 mm by 23 mm.
If the old belt’s printed code is still legible, how to replace a V belt becomes simpler — the code tells you both section and length. An A-46 belt has a 46-inch inside length. B-60 means 60 inches inside length. For wedge-profile belts, SPA 1200 means 1,200 mm outside length. The hard numbers matter, because a belt that’s close but not exact will slip, squeal, or wear out early.
If the code is worn off, measure the top width and height with a caliper to identify the section. For length, use a flexible tape measure around the outside circumference, or wrap a string in the grooves and measure that. A broken belt is harder — use the pulleys and the machine’s nameplate to identify the right size.
Step 4: Install, Tension, and Test Run
Route the new belt exactly as your sketch shows, with the ribs or the V grooves seated squarely on each pulley. Gates instructs aligning the belt ribs with the pulley grooves and making sure the belt sits flat, not twisted.
Apply tension by moving the accessory (like the alternator) back away from the engine, then tightening its bolts. The classic rule of thumb for automotive V-belts: the belt should have about 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) of movement at the midpoint between pulleys when pressed firmly. Less means over-tight, which wears out bearings; more means too loose, which causes slip and squeal.
Start the engine or run the machine and listen. A properly installed belt runs quietly. If you hear squealing or see the belt slipping, shut down and recheck tension and routing.
