Installing Valve Keepers: The Step Order That Works

Valve keeper installation follows the same sequence on every spring-retained valvetrain: hold the valve up, place the spring and retainer, seat both keepers in the grooves, then release spring pressure slowly.

  1. Support the valve so it can’t drop. With the head off the engine, a rag or block under the valve holds it up; with the head still mounted, keep the piston near top dead center or hold the valve up with air pressure.
  2. Place the spring over the valve stem, then the retainer on top of it.
  3. Set the keepers in the retainer.
