How to Install a Universal ATV Plow Mount | Fit One Right

Installing a universal ATV plow mount means removing the skid plate, picking the U-bolts that fit your frame, and leaving everything loose until it clears the tires.

The word “universal” does a lot of work on a plow mount box. A universal ATV plow mount can bolt to many machines, but the way you install one still comes down to your frame shape, your skid plate, and the clearance you leave around the blade. The good news: nearly every kit follows the same basic sequence, and most install mistakes happen at the same three steps.

What You Need Before You Start

KFI Products and Kolpin both sell universal ATV plow mounts that use U-bolts and strap-style brackets to clamp onto the frame. Their manuals share the same assumption: you work on a parked ATV, you remove the skid plate, and you test-fit hardware before you tighten anything. Have these ready:

  • Wrenches and sockets that fit the kit’s nuts and bolts
  • A torque wrench for final tightening
  • The four U-bolt options that ship with the kit
  • Penetrating oil if the skid-plate bolts are rusted

You only need the mount itself for this job. The push tube and blade are separate pieces you attach after the mount is torqued down.

Installing the Mount: The Step Order That Works

Both KFI’s manual for the Universal ATV Plow Mount (#105745) and Kolpin’s manual for the 15-0050 Universal All Mount follow nearly identical steps. Here is the order that keeps the mount aligned instead of fighting itself.

  1. Remove the skid plate. Set the hardware aside in a labeled bag so it goes back on later.
  2. Pre-fit the U-bolts. The kit includes several U-bolt sizes, and both manuals say to test them against your frame tubing before committing. The right one wraps the frame rail without slop.
  3. Install the chosen U-bolts on the frame rails where the straps will sit. The straps have to lay flat against the frame, so confirm that before you go further.
  4. Mount the straps. Run the carriage bolts through the center slot of each strap and attach the straps to the U-bolts. Leave these fasteners loose.
  5. Attach the universal mount weldment to the straps. This is the angled steel piece the push tube slides into.
  6. Check set-back and clearance. Verify the mount doesn’t touch tires, suspension, or body panels.
  7. Torque everything to the spec in the manual, then attach the push tube with the clevis pin and hair pin.

The step people rush is number six. If the blade sits too close to the front tires, it can strike them on the first turn. Adjust the mount’s position while the hardware is still loose, then finish the torque sequence.

Does “Universal” Mean It Fits Your ATV?

Not always. The manuals tell you to confirm the straps lay flat and contact nothing except the mounting points, and even that doesn’t guarantee a clean fit. Some mounts clamp to the frame using skid-plate holes instead of U-bolts. Others need the bumper or winch bracket removed before they seat properly. Arctic Cat’s quick-attach plow instructions list multiple fastener configurations for different machines, which shows that vehicle-specific details show up even inside a single system.

Before you order, compare your ATV’s bumper layout, skid plate, and frame rails against the mount’s strap positions. If the kit looks close but not exact, expect to do minor trimming of plastic covers—not bending of steel. If you’re still deciding which kit to run, check our tested universal ATV plow mounts for fitment notes on popular models.

After the first few hours of use, re-check the hardware. Manufacturer instructions ask for a periodic bolt check because frame vibration works fasteners loose faster than owners expect. Retorque anything that has backed off, and you’re back in business.
