Installing a tube in a bicycle tire requires seating one bead, inserting the tube valve, and mounting the second bead without pinching the tube.
Learning how to put a tube in a tire is one of the most useful skills for any cyclist, as it gets you back on the road after a flat. The process is straightforward, but rushing it often leads to a pinched tube and a brand-new flat. Here is the exact order of operations that works for almost any bicycle wheel.
Before You Start: Check the Rim and Tire
A new tube will not hold air for long if the inside of the tire is still harboring the object that caused the flat. Run your fingers slowly around the inside of the tire casing—carefully—to feel for sharp glass, thorns, or wire. Check the rim’s inner surface and the rim tape as well, since a torn rim tape can allow the tube to contact the sharp spoke nipples beneath it.
If the rim tape is damaged or shifted, replace it before installing a fresh tube. The tape is a thin strip that covers the spoke holes, and without it, the tube can get cut as it inflates against the nipples. Ignoring this step is the most common reason a new tube fails immediately after installation.
Seat the First Bead and Install the Tube
Start by mounting one side of the tire, called the bead, onto the rim. You should be able to push this first bead on by hand without any tools. Make sure the bead edge is seated down into the center channel of the rim, as this creates more slack for fitting the second bead later.
Next, inflate the new tube just slightly so it holds a round shape. This small amount of air, often called a “dressing,” makes the tube easier to handle and less likely to get twisted. Insert the valve through the valve hole in the rim, making sure it sits perfectly straight and does not get pulled at an angle. Then, tuck the rest of the tube evenly inside the tire’s cavity, working your way around the wheel on both sides of the valve.
Mount the Second Bead Without Pinching
This is the step where most people damage a new tube. Begin seating the second bead at the point opposite the valve, and work evenly toward both sides of the wheel toward the valve. The goal is to push the bead over the rim edge, all while keeping the tube well inside the rim well so it does not get caught between the tire and the rim’s edge.
As you work, constantly check that the tube is not protruding from under the bead. If you need a tire lever to finish the last few inches near the valve, use it with caution—a metal lever can easily punch a hole through the tube. If the tube feels pinched, deflate it completely, push it deeper into the tire, and try again.
Inflate, Seat the Bead, and Finish
Inflate the tube slowly to a low pressure first, which is around 20-30 psi for most tires. As the air goes in, check both beads to confirm they are fully seated—the tire should have a uniform line around the rim without any bulges or dips. If a section of tube is visible where the tire meets the rim, deflate and reposition it.
