When your tread can’t find grip, tire chains step in. They wrap around the drive wheels and force metal links into the slick surface beneath, giving your vehicle the traction it needs to move forward and stop. Here’s what they actually do, how they work, and when you genuinely need them.
How Tire Chains Improve Traction
Tire chains work by changing how the tire contacts the road. The vehicle’s weight presses the chain links into the snow or ice, and as the tire rotates, those links dig through the slick layer to reach the firmer surface below. Instead of sliding on top of the ice, the tire breaks through it.
This matters most when normal tread depth isn’t enough to get you moving:
- Deep snow: Chains bite deeper than tread, pushing through to packed snow or pavement.
- Ice: The metal links scratch and grip the frozen surface, where rubber simply slides.
- Mud: A secondary use—chains shed mud and find traction where tires sink.
You’ll find two main styles: traditional metal-link chains that wrap entirely around the tire, and cable-style traction devices that use a lighter steel cable. Both do the same job, but full chains generally offer more aggressive grip in deep snow.
When Do You Actually Need Chains?
You need tire chains when 4WD or AWD and winter tires aren’t enough. That’s not an insult to your drivetrain—it’s physics. 4WD helps you go, but it does nothing for braking or cornering on sheer ice. Chains add the mechanical grip that even the best winter tire can’t match in extreme conditions.
Many mountain passes and rural routes have designated chain-required areas, and signs will tell you when to stop and install them. You’re also likely to need chains if you’re driving an older two-wheel-drive vehicle in snowy conditions, or if you’re pulling a trailer on icy roads.
Snow chain documentation notes that even 4WD vehicles can still need chains in severe winter weather. The biggest mistake is waiting until you’re already stuck—installing chains once the wheels are spinning in deep snow is far harder than putting them on before you need them.
How To Install And Use Tire Chains
Installation is straightforward but has a few critical details. You drape the chain over the top of the tire, hook the connecting device on the inside, then pull the chain tight and secure the fasteners on the outside. The chain should fit snugly, not loose enough to slap the fender.
While chains are on, keep your speed well under normal posted limits. Drive slowly and smoothly: hard acceleration or heavy braking can stress the chains and reduce your control. And the moment the road clears, remove them. Driving on bare pavement chews up the chains quickly and can make the vehicle feel unstable at speed.
Chains are built for specific tire sizes, and a chain that’s too big won’t seat properly, while one that’s too small can damage the tire and brake lines.
