The trickiest part is the pairing window—most openers give you 30 seconds after pressing the Learn button to enter your code on the keypad, and thousands of DIY installations fail because that window expires before the PIN goes in. Whether you bought a Chamberlain myQ, a Genie, or a universal model, the same basic steps apply with a few brand-specific twists.

What You Need Before You Start

A wireless keypad kit (battery included or separate), a 9V battery for most models, a drill with a 3/16-inch bit for the mounting screw, a tape measure, and a ladder if your opener’s Learn button is ceiling-mounted.

Step 1: Choose the Mounting Spot

Pick an exterior location next to the garage door that is within range of the opener and easy to reach. Do not mount directly on bare metal—a garage-door installation guide warns that metal siding can weaken radio range enough to cause daily frustration. Hold the keypad in position and test the code before drilling if the opener sits far away; that one-minute test can save you from patching unwanted holes.

Step 2: Install the Battery and Mount the Keypad

Open the battery compartment and snap in a 9V battery with the correct polarity (the Chamberlain myQ manual is explicit about this). For the mount itself, Genie’s method calls for a mounting screw with a 1/8-inch gap between the screw head and the wall—slide the keypad onto the screw from above until it clicks. Chamberlain’s adhesive-strip method works if you press the keypad onto the cleaned surface for at least 30 seconds, though adding the optional screws gives better long-term security.

Step 3: Program the Keypad PIN

The PIN programming sequence changes by brand, so check the model’s manual first. Chamberlain/myQ keypads require pressing and holding “0” and “3” together until the backlight glows solid, then entering a 4-digit PIN. The myQ Smart Video Keypad works differently—you create a 4 to 8 digit PIN inside the myQ app before the keypad ever touches the opener. If your keypad uses an unfamiliar button combo, the manufacturer’s printed sheet or online manual is the only reliable source.

Step 4: Pair the Keypad to the Garage Door Opener

This is where most people slip up. Press the opener’s Learn button—it’s usually a square or round button on the back or side of the motor unit, often colored purple, yellow, or red. The opener will give you 30 seconds (on the Chamberlain myQ system) to complete the pairing on the keypad. Walk to the keypad, enter your PIN, then press the Home button repeatedly until the opener clicks or the light flashes. The door may activate immediately—stand clear during testing.

If your keypad is a Genie model, the pairing procedure shares the same Learn-button logic but may require holding a different button combination.

Step 5: Test the Code

Enter your programmed PIN and press the Home button or the dedicated open/close button. The door should operate smoothly. If nothing happens, the most common cause is letting the 30-second Learn window expire—start over from Step 4 and move faster between the opener and the keypad.
