How To Use a 5-Gallon Safety Gas Can Safely

Keep the nozzle in contact with the can during filling to dissipate static. Leave 5 to 10 percent headspace (do not fill beyond 95 percent capacity) so expanding fuel has room.
Storage. Close the cap tightly after each use. Keep cans in a cool, well-ventilated area away from pilot lights, stoves, heaters, electric mowers, and other ignition sources. The CPSC warns against storing fuel cans inside a house or basement, or near fuel-burning appliances.
Transport. Secure cans upright with tiedowns or a bracket so they cannot slide or tip. Avoid carrying them in a closed vehicle without ventilation — fuel vapor needs to disperse.
Maintenance. Periodically inspect the cap, spring closure, and flame arrester screen to confirm everything works properly, per Oregon’s guidance. A worn seal or clogged screen defeats the safety design.
Common Mistakes To Avoid
Filling a gas can inside a vehicle or on a plastic truck bed liner is one of the most frequent errors — it bypasses the static dissipation and ventilation that make ground-level filling safer. Using unapproved containers such as glass bottles or plastic milk jugs is another serious hazard, since they lack pressure relief and spill protection.
Storing fuel too close to heat sources or in poorly ventilated indoor spaces, leaving the can open or overfilled, and failing to maintain the spring lid and flame arrester are all avoidable risks. Transporting the can on its side also defeats the sealed-lid design and can cause leaks.
